SageMaker bought Retrieval Technologies for its real-time news technology and content licenses. As Senior Product Manager leveraged sales and marketing knowledge of News Machine. Responsibilities included sales support & training, RFP / RFQ preparation, and product demonstrations. Product support of News Machine included sales to Ketchum PR and Reuters Business Briefing.

Retrieval Technologies, Inc.  •  1997–1999

Retrieval Technologies is a knowledge management company. Responsibilities cover publicity, collateral materials development, market analysis, advertising, direct marketing, strategic planning, sales management, tradeshow coordination, RFP preparation, product research, and documentation. Marketing duties include conceptualizing, executing, and coordinating multimedia presentations. Sales management tasks include business development, product pricing, staff training in product knowledge, and creating, applying, and analyzing sales metrics. Competitive Intelligence requiring tracking trends in information technologies as well as collaborating on the development and design of the company’s Internet/Intranet information product called News Machine and NewsCLICKS. Associated Press, World Bank / IMF, and Procter & Gamble among the customers personally sold.

Director of Marketing

SMS Data Products Group, McLean, VA  •  1991–1997

As Director of Marketing for the CD-ROM division, turned a federal contract with little to no initial sales into a contract that delivered over 150,000 CD-ROM towers and developed a complete CD-ROM networking product line for retail. Job responsibilities included product development and product marketing as well as advertising and the creation of collateral materials for all markets. To leverage the existing CD-ROM business, negotiated an exclusive federal contract with Dialog OnDisc for twice the normal royalties. Involvement with bid strategy and proposal writing resulted in several million-dollar-plus CD-ROM awards. Created the company’s original Internet Web site, in 1994, and acquired numerous patents and trademarks. Public relations duties included speaking engagements at SIGCAT seminars and conferences on CD-ROM networking philosophies and information trends.

Digipro was a high-tech computer peripherals company. Work encompassed publicity, lobbying, collateral materials development, advertising, tradeshow coordination, and business development. Wrote a business plan that generated additional venture capital and a dozen favorable product announcements and product reviews.

The Advertising Store was a full-service ad agency that employed several free-lance designers. Responsibilities included creative design, copywriting, promotions, and account management in all media for retail and industrial clients. Projects at the agency varied from HDTV product development to Congressional lobbying. Self-promotion included speaking at Public Relations Council of Alabama conferences and teaching popular evening classes at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, on creativity and small business management.

Genesis Graphics produced specialty publications. The job required management and production skills for the creation of magazine spreads and newsprint tabloids.

Adworks is primarily the in-house advertising agency for a chain of stores called Underground Camera. Responsibilities were co-op ad layout, package design, and point of purchase displays.

At Cotton Communications, a publishing, advertising, and public relations firm, started as a student creative consultant and continued during and after college as a creative director. Client work involved public, private, industrial, and retail markets in many different capacities, as a copywriter, designer, art director, traffic coordinator, publicist, and accounts manager. Publicity projects included television, radio and newspaper coverage concerning the Centrum in Worcester, sports and entertainment events, and a city campaign to host the National Sport Festival.
